Rooted in Canadian Spirit
Though Birks’ origins are rooted in English craftsmanship and know-how, the company truly came to life in 1879, when Henry Birks opened the first boutique on Montreal’s Saint James Street. By 1901, Birks had expanded its presence from coast to coast, establishing iconic stores in cities such as Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, and Calgary—solidifying its reputation as a purveyor of exceptional luxury.
A Majestic Legacy
Birks is one of the few Canadian companies to hold a royal warrant, granted in 1935 by King George VI. The brand has a rich history of crafting gifts for British royalty, including King George VI, Princess Elizabeth, and Queen Elizabeth II, who once described her Birks necklace as the most beautiful gift she had ever received. This recognition extends to Princess Grace of Monaco and continues today with Meghan, Duchess of Sussex.

Over the years, Birks has received remarkable recognition, including six Diamonds-International Awards for jewellery design. This distinction is unmatched by any other Canadian company and reflects the brand’s dedication to craftsmanship. In the early 2000s, Birks was also among the pioneers of Canadian-mined diamonds, setting a new industry standard and reinforcing the company’s commitment to innovation and ethical practices.
